How I Became a Real Estate Agent

Darcy Anderson is a broker and REALTOR® at Latah Realty. She has been practicing real estate for nearly 15 years now after getting licensed in January of 2006.

Anderson took over as a co-owner of Latah Realty over 10 years ago and continues to work hard to live up to Gary Tribble, the founder of Latah Realty, and his legacy.

Anderson is a life-long resident of Latah County, and currently lives in Moscow, Idaho.

Anderson said, “Being a native of the Palouse, it is no surprise to me why everyone wants a piece of what we have here.”

Anderson has also served on the Latah County Board of Realtors.  The mission of the Latah County Board of REALTORs® is, “to provide members with education and resources that enable them to conduct their business successfully, to build strong relationships between REALTORs® and their communities, to promote and preserve private property rights, and to uphold and enforce the REALTOR® code of ethics.”

There is a lot of work that goes into being a real estate agent and being successful in the business takes a particular type of hardworking and passionate individual.

What led you wanting to become a real estate agent?
Anderson said she, “had a good friend who was a successful agent and she suggested (I) give it a try.”

Anderson was previously a stay-at-home mom looking to begin work outside the home.

What did you do before you were a REALTOR®?
Before Anderson was a REALTOR®, she received her associates degree in applied science. She focused on the medical industry before she had children. Although, once she had kids, Anderson said she chose to stay home with them. While she was a stay-at-home mom, she also did medical transcription, was a cheer advisor, and at one point even ran a daycare out of her home.

Anderson enjoyed a lot of variety in her life, which is certainly an asset and strength real estate agents seem to share.

What is the schooling to become a REALTOR® like?
Anderson said the schooling is not too difficult. She attended classes in Lewiston for four weeks before taking the Idaho real estate exam to become a licensed REALTOR®.

According to the Real Estate Academy of Idaho, prospective real estate agents must complete two prelicense modules, each totaling 45 hours.

How do you like being a REALTOR®?
Anderson said she loves being a real estate agent!

What is the best part of being a real estate agent?
“The best part of it is the interaction with people, building new relationships and helping people achieve their goals in real estate!” Anderson said.

What is the worst part of it?
“Having bad news to tell people,” she said, “it never gets easier.”

Sometimes an appraisal or sale or listing does not go quite as planned. This is why it is important to work with a trusted real estate agent who can offer advice if plans go awry.

What is some advice you would give to anyone interested in getting their license?
Anderson said potential real estate agents should shadow an existing agent to better understand what the real estate industry is like.

“I would also advise them to never get too comfortable with how things are; this industry is ever-changing, and you have to be flexible,” Anderson said.

Anderson’s last piece of advice is a great starting point for those interested in pursuing a career in real estate. Latah Realty is almost always open to working with potential agents!
